The main objectives of the convention are the reduction of the production of hazardous waste and the restriction of transboundary movement and disposal of such waste.

It also aims to ensure that any transboundary movement and disposal of hazardous waste, when allowed, is strictly controlled and is undertaken in an environmentally sound and responsible way.
