Vice Minister Pan Yue of MEP met with visiting Mr. Lester R Brown, a world-famous environmentalist and President of Earth Policy Institute on June 3. They had in-depth discussions on such topics as environmental protection and economic development mode, energy and food security, climate change and the development of renewable energy.

Vice Minister Pan briefly introduced to Mr. Brown about present national efforts in earthquake relief and hard work of environmental protection workers on avoiding environmental secondary disasters and ensuring nuclear & radiation safety and drinking water safety. Mr. Brown appreciated the brave spirit and strong will of the Chinese Government and people facing the huge natural disaster.

Mr. Brown pointed out that climate change is a great challenge confronting mankind. Scientific environmental policy will help the mitigation of climate change. If human beings continue following the old social and economic development mode, it will not only threaten the stability of eco systems, but also affect grain and energy security and cause social turmoil.

Vice Minister Pan welcomed the suggestions of scientists like Mr. Brown for sustainable development of China. He said that sustainable development cause of China needs world participation and China is determined to make its due contribution to the improvement of global environment.
