MEP released the progress of the thematic campaign on the environmental protection of drinking water sources in Yangtze River economic belt. By the end of August, the local areas had addressed 429 environmental problems, accounting for 87.6 percent of the total.
It was reported that 319 centralized drinking water sources seated in 126 cities at or above prefectural level in 11 provinces (municipalities) had been canvassed, revealing 490 environmental problems. To be specific, Zhejiang completed the treatment of the problems in December 2016, the first of all areas concerned, and Shanghai managed to do so by July 2017. So far, Anhui, Hunan, Sichuan, and Hubei completed this task by 97 percent, 91.3 percent, 90.8 percent, and 88.7 percent respectively. The figure was 84.6 percent for Chongqing, 84.3 percent for Guizhou, 83.3 percent for Yunnan, 79.1 percent for Jiangsu, and 50 percent for Jiangxi.
Efforts started for the treatment of the 13 remaining problems in Sichuan and Chongqing.
Another 61 problems for which the treatment was under way are found in 35 prefectural cities (prefectures) of nine provinces (municipalities), specifically, 13 in Guizhou, 11 in Sichuan, 9 in Jiangsu, 7 in Hunan, 7 in Hubei, 6 in Jiangxi, 4 in Chongqing, 3 in Yunnan, and one in Anhui.
The Ministry is planning ministerial-level inspections to accelerate the treatment process and will hold relevant departments and individuals accountable for false report on the treatment process, underperformed responsibilities, and sluggishness.
