MEP monitors radiation levels in emergency response to DPRK nuclear test

MEP (NNSA) activated the emergency preparedness plan at 11:46 on Sept. 3 in response to the sixth nuclear test conducted by Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), based on an earthquake registered 6.3 on Richter scale that was captured by China Earthquake Administration at 11:30 on Sept. 3 in DPRK, with the epicenter at a depth of zero km, from which a nuclear test could be inferred.

The radiation monitoring centers at Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang in Northeast China and in Shandong started to monitor the radiation levels in China’s northeastern border. According to the monitoring data released at 16:00 and 22:00 on Sept. 3 and 04:00 on Sept. 4, the real-time, constant absorbed dose rate in air had been within the natural background range in the northeastern border and surrounding areas, which is indicative that the DPRK’s nuclear test has not imposed any impact on the environment and the general public in China.
