On May 31, 2008, the 3rd Students' International Environment Forum and Mayors' Forum, which was organized by Peking University, China Environmental Protection Foundation, Beijing Electric Power Corporation, and Environmental Education Base of China's College Students and which focused on "livable city, green Olympics-the Youth in action", was successfully held in Yingjie Communication Center of Peking University. Deputy Director of the Senior Executive Committee and Vice President of Peking University Mr. Lin Junjing, Director of the School Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League Mr. Zhou Changkui, Secretary General of China Environmental Protection Foundation under MEP Mr. Li Wei, and Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Administration Commission Ms. Chen Ling attended the forum and delivered speeches. Mayor of Melbourne city John So, and Rob, Vice President of University of Victoria from Australia also presented at the forum. 20-odd representatives of mayors and 50-0dd representatives from business circles from all corners of the country and more than 200 teachers and students from universities and colleges at home and abroad took part in this event.

At present, environmental issue has been the common concern of the world, and the conflict between environmental protection and economic development is becoming increasingly prominent. Under the guidance of the concept on building conservation culture, this forum, in the context of the rising urbanization level worldwide, which is an important issue, and considering the green Olympics to be held in Beijing, had high-level discussions on the building of a livable city. Through in-depth international communications, this forum helped accumulate experience, integrate resources and encourage young students to involve in the building of conservation culture with their own actions.

In interactive activities, the guests presented the flags to representatives of the group who extended environmental education in the Environmental Education Base of College Students during summer vacations. After that, students from the higher education institutions of the five continents read out the Manifesto of Green Olympics which is drafted at the Base, calling for the worldwide youths to devote themselves to environmental protection cause and build a green future together. As of June 1, 2008, the country will institute a system for paid use of plastic shopping bags. To answer the call of the country, the Base organized the Contest for Design of Environment-friendly Cloth Bags and made public the winning works on the forum. The Base also presented the bags made according to the winning works to students from 10-odd higher education institutions from five continents, calling for everybody's action to declare war against white pollution and build a green home.

On that afternoon, five sub-forums were also held on "developing low-carbon economy and building livable cities", on "use of electric power and environment-friendly society", on collecting projects on promoting "livable city, green Olympics-the youth in action" during summer vacation, and on "the Special Meeting for Report on Environmental Education in International Higher Education Institutions" and "Project on Future College Students-the Workshop of Middle-school Presidents". At the forums, college students and people from all walks of life exchanged opinions around the topics, pooled the wisdom and efforts of all, built common consensus and achieved good results. The forum is gradually becoming an important platform for introducing China's achievements in environmental education and bringing in from abroad the successful experience of the international community in environmental protection and energy-saving and emissions reduction.
