¡¡¡¡Report from Beijing, July 19
¡¡¡¡MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie met with a delegation led by UNEP Deputy Executive Director Ms. Amina Mohamed in Beijing today. They exchanged views on furthering cooperation between China and UNEP.
¡¡¡¡Vice Minister Li first welcomed the delegation headed by Ms. Mohamed. He noted that MEP and UNEP started cooperation in 1970s. These years of collaboration has led to long-term and stable partnership and a series of substantial cooperation in all respects. We sing high praise for bilateral environmental cooperation and hope for continued strengthening of this cooperation which would surely deliver more fruitful results. At the just concluded UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Premier Wen Jiabao announced 6 million dollars of donation to UNEP trust fund to support environmental management capacity building in developing countries. We aim to see that UNEP is able to help more developing countries to enhance their capacity for environmental protection and promote the development of global environmental cause.
¡¡¡¡Vice Minister Li stressed that the new strategic partnership between China and Africa progressed with satisfactory results. The deepening cooperation between China and African countries is of great significance to the sustainable development of Africa and the world as a whole. China and African countries share a lot and bilateral cooperation serves the interest of both parties. Looking into the future, we will learn from each other and cooperate by making best of each other¡¯s advantage for common development.
¡¡¡¡Mohamed thought highly of the close ties between UNEP and MEP and wished UNEP would further cooperation with MEP in such fields as China-Africa cooperation. Both sides also exchanged views on issues like partnership on international ecosystem management, the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia and the Action Plan for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Northwest Pacific Region.
