Article type: Translated

Vice Minister of MEP Wu Xiaoqing met today with Penny Wong, Australian Minister for Climate Change and Water. Both sides exchanged views on climate change and bilateral environmental cooperation.

First of all, Wu Xiaoqing expressed his welcome on behalf of Minister Zhou Shengxian to Penny Wong and congratulated the latter for his appointment as Minister for Climate Change and Water. Mr. Wu said that Chinese Government had always taken water pollution control as the top priority and done its utmost to guarantee safe drinking water for the people. In the near future, the country would take pollution reduction measures and issue stricter water pollution control standards, and learn from the state-of-art technology from overseas so that bigger progress can be made in water pollution control.

Wu Xiaoqing pointed out that Chinese Government promulgated China National Climate Change Programme last May, indicating that the country would enhance the capacity building on response to climate change and make positive efforts in this field.

Penny Wong hoped that both sides enhance the bilateral cooperation in the environmental protection field, actively communicate with the international community, share the experience in this field, and promote the progress in environmental protection.
