2008-01-29
Article type: Translated

On Jan. 25, SEPA Vice Minister Li Ganjie met with visiting UN Under-Sectary-General Sha Zukang at State Environmental Protection Administration. Both sides thoroughly exchanged their views on international environmental issues including climate change.

Li Ganjie welcomed Sha Zukang on behalf of SEPA Minister Zhou Shengxian. He said that the Chinese government highly valued climate change and had made substantial contributions to emission reduction through unremitting efforts in various fields including pollution prevention and control, energy conservation and consumption reduction, afforestation as well as population control. Last year the Chinese government formed a leading group for combating climate change with Premier Wen Jiabao as group leader and also released China's National Climate Change Program. China will continue its efforts in addressing climate change with more positive attitude and effective measures. We hope the United Nations will play a larger role in promoting international exchanges and cooperation in related technologies and finance for emission reduction, delivering solid boost in all countries' capacity to combat climate change.

Sha Zukang noted that climate issue was an issue concerning environment, development as well as political affairs. As a big and responsible developing country, China needs to step up its efforts in environmental protection and make greater contributions to climate change and other global environmental issues based on showing adequate respect for its people's right to subsistence and development.
