Secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Minister of Environmental Protection Li Ganjie met with a delegation headed by his Norwegian counterpart Vidar Helgesen on Tuesday. The two sides exchanged views on promoting green development, deepening the cooperation in the environment field, and other issues of common concern.

On behalf of his Ministry, Li began the meeting by greeting the delegation headed by Vidar Helgesen and then briefly introduced the ongoing environmental protection efforts in China. The Chinese Government has always attached great importance to the environmental protection work, put the development of ecological civilization on a more important and strategic position in recent years, energetically advocated green development patterns and lifestyles, introduced the 13th Five-Year Plan for National Ecological and Environmental Protection, and the action plans targeting air, water, and soil pollution, moved forward with the modernization of the ecological and environmental governance systems and capacities, and made new strides in all those fronts, he said.

The environmental ties between China and Norway date back to a long time ago and have generated notable results that are very useful for the development of both China’s environmental protection undertaking and the global environment, noted Li. At the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation a while ago, President Xi Jinping proposed to establish ecological and environmental protection big data service platform, advocated the belt and road international alliance for green development, and mobilized the belt and road countries to strengthen ecological and environmental cooperation and work together to achieve the 2030 sustainable development goals. This has presented new opportunities and impetuses for the two sides to further strengthen environmental protection cooperation. He hoped the two sides focus on long-term and strategic issues of overall importance, deepen bilateral cooperation under the framework of the green belt and road initiative, and work together to address global environmental challenges. The Norwegian side has always been a key partner under the framework of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, and he hoped the two sides may continue with the researches on the major topics under this framework.

Vidar Helgesen appreciated China’s achievements in environmental protection, and spoke highly of the bilateral environmental cooperation outcomes over the long period of time. He said, the Norwegian side will actively contribute to the green belt and road initiative, and work with the Chinese side to deepen bilateral and global cooperation on environmental issues of common concern, and play an active role in the international environmental protection affairs.

After the meeting, the two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development between the environmental protection departments of the two countries.
