Li Ganjie meets with German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

On July 9, 2018, Minister Li Ganjie met with Madame Schulze, German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, on the sidelines of the fifth round of China-Germany Inter-governmental Consultation. The two sides exchanged views on the cooperation in the areas of the ecological and environmental protection and climate change mitigation.  

Li shared with the German side the guiding principles of the Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and the National Conference on Ecological and Environmental Protection, China’s decisions and deployments on comprehensively strengthening the ecological and environmental protection and battling against pollution, as well as its three-year action plan for clean air. Speaking of tackling climate change, Li mentioned that China has adopted a myriad of measures to mitigate climate change, integrated it into the overall plan of national economic and social development, and achieved the low-carbon intensity goals ahead of schedule.  

The two countries have maintained a good partnership in protecting the environment and addressing climate change over the past few years, noted Li. The two sides have conducted pragmatic cooperation on a series of major subjects ranging from establishing environmental governance system, controlling PM2.5 pollution, launching soil pollution census, setting up carbon emission trading system, to adapting to and mitigating climate change, through strategic policy dialogues, technological exchanges, and bilateral cooperation mechanisms like climate task force, environment forum, and strategic environmental dialogue.  

Li stressed that the two sides will enjoy greater prospects for future cooperation in the ecological and environmental protection area, and that China is ready to deepening bilateral ties in such protection and climate mitigation, advance the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and contribute to building a clean and beautiful world.  

Madame Schulze spoke highly of China’s achievements in ecological conservation and climate change mitigation, vowed to support China’s 2020 sponsorship of the COP 15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, reiterated their commitment to bilateral cooperation in the two fields, and hoped for further communications and cooperation in this direction.  

Furthermore, the two sides decided to continue the bilateral cooperation in the areas of air, water, soil pollution control, climate change mitigation, the cooperation under the CCICED framework, biodiversity conservation, and chemicals safety; to initiate the cooperation on marine environment protection, and to organize the sixth China-Germany Environment Forum in 2019.
